New Gmail Layouts and saving as templates

Hi All, 

I've noticed Gmail have updated their layouts to allow for more customisation - YAY

However, I've noticed that you now can save them as templates and keep the formatting. 

Previously we used a basic layout to create a template, then use that template to respond to common enquiries, changing who the email was addressed to each time. 

I've noticed now with the changes, I have to go in and edit & save the layout each time, and cannot save it as a template without the formatting getting skewed. Is anyone else experiencing this? 

I love the new layouts but by not being able to save them as templates it's making my job much more cumbersome.
