User-editable custom field

I would like to add a custom field in the user profile and allow the users to change the information in it - rather than having it controlled by the admin. I have found how to create the field, but have not found how to allow the end user to change the info. Is that possible?

This would be a nice addition - a place where users can add information about themselves, their role/responsibilities and any projects they work on - especially if it was visible in the new Contacts layout.

It would also be nice if we could bulk update the custom fields.  Currently Google only allows bulk updating of their system fields.
