The AI Studio chat become really slow after few chats, is it slow generation or browser issue?

In Google AI Studio, in chat prompt layout, after having a couple of back and forth in the chat, the typing and generation becomes painfully slow and laggy. It didn't happen in the freeform prompt layout but it has been made legacy recently and now I'm stuck with chat prompt layout only.

Is this a browser issue or AI generation issue? I'm using chrome and its updated and I've seen this issue with everything closed and just this tab open in Chrome, nothing else. Is anyone facing this issue?

I am also experiencing this issue.  The input lag is so bad that I am often typing ahead of the displayed characters as I type.  I do not see this lag typing in the chrome url bar, for example, but I do in the prompt input box.

I'm having exactly the same issue. Found a way to "counter it" using wordpad to type my text and then copy/paste it. But really annoying...

Same problem here.

Thank you all for confirming I'm not alone. If someone can confirm that this is happening on billing accounts too. If it's not occurring there, then definitely it's intentional from Google to deter free use, which is bizarre! They could've easily apply their already enforced request limits, what's the point of giving 1M context window and not be able to use even 10% of it.

The lag went away for me in Chrome on Windows, after enabling the "Overlays Scrollbars" experiment

The overlay scrolling is an experimental feature with seriously implications and is intended for developers.

On top of that, I don't think it's a browser issue otherwise it would be happening on other AI chat agents and websites.

I was just providing a workaround that worked for me.

I did try on Chrome for Android and Mac, and didn't see the same issues, Chrome on Windows + extensions disabled (except for one) is the only one that had issues in my anecdotal exp

Also, an issue not happening on other sites does not mean there isn't a browser bug, it's not like a bug will happen in every single scenario. Without digging into the code I don't think anyone in this thread really knows the root cause.

You are right, it does not lag in Chrome for Android and Mac. So, it could be an issue with Chrome for Windows. Thanks for narrowing it down. I'll also report an issue through Chrome. Let's see what they say. Cheers!

Awesome! Thank you for this hint -- worked for me!

chrome://flags
Overlay Scrollbars -> Enabled

No more lag when typing or getting the output in Google AI Studio

Hey there. In chrome for mac, I have the lag. In chrome://flags, i dont see any overlay scrollbars experiment. I can see select hw overlay strategies. Am i missing something? Using chrome version 125.0.6422.76 official build x86_64

According to the 125.0.6422.77 release notes, this experiment is only available for Windows, Linux, ChromeOS, Fuchsia, and Lacros

In my Chrome 125.0.6422.77 for Windows it is included. No idea, unfortunately, how to fix the lag on a Mac.

Thanks but i dont see this experiment on chrome mac under chrome flags. I have only select hw overlay strategies. Am i missing something. Chrome is up to date. And yes, the lag is happening on mac too.

I have the same issue. It barely runs for me. I'm also using the latest version of Chrome.

I've tried on Firefox on Windows and it's not lagging there. Can anyone confirm the same?

I can confirm the opposite. As soon as I hit around 200K tokens, my system almost crashes.. using Firefox.

same issue on my chrome windows, even when Overlays Scrollbars enabled 😞

I found this solution: You go to the file saved in your Google Drive automatically (named after your conversation), download it, then edit it and save it as a .txt file. After that, upload it to a new conversation in Google AI Studio. It contains all the context, and now you have a lag-free text field. and you even win more tokens

I would like to add a voice to the frustration. I found this thread after Googling for an answer to why AI Studio has ground to a halt after a long Q&A. I tried the Overlay Scrollbars fix and I have tried the "use it on Android" fix. Neither helps. Even with the Overlay fix (which makes no noticeable difference for me) Gemini 2.5 in AI Studio doesn't work for me on Windows / Chrome or on Android / Chrome after a long brainstorming session. It's more than long delays for me now. It was long delays but they kept on getting longer and now I haven't been able to type a prompt for more than an hour. This means I now know I can saves a considerable amount of time in future not using it at all.

I haven't been able to try the DOM fix because I don't know how. If anybody tries it and it works then please post a guide to this thread.

If it's any help to others who want a guide, I am up to 279,951 tokens. This is the end of the road. I can go no further.

279k tokens? My chat is dead at 70k right now. I used to be able to go to 200k a few days ago, but since yesterday the chat becomes incredibly laggy at just 40k, and broderline unusable at 70-80k.

This is so frustrating.

Confirming all this on my Mac Chrome (everything up to date). MBP 64GB M1 Pro.

Surprised this is an issue - but Google is ultimately a bunch of you and me's, not super intelligent AI's running the show... yet.

All other sites and functions work well. Just AI studio is unusable because it is so lagging. Typing is impossible. (90k tokens used)

Still an issue for me, it's near unusable after 60k tokens. I think somehow they are trying to load the entire thing client side
