AppSheet does not have native audio capacity, a feature that many are waiting for:
Audio Recording /Audio Playing Field Type
However, AppSheet does have a File column, which allows one to upload various types of files, including audio files, to the app. Then, when one taps of the automatically generated action, the audio file plays in the device's browser. Once the audio has been pulled into the app, it works quite well.
The problem I'm having is integrating AppSheet's functionality with the Voice Memo app on an iPhone. I've tried various methods but haven't been able to transfer any of my voice files to AppSheet. The only thing that has worked for me is emailing the audio to myself, downloading the file, and then pulling it into my template app via my computer's browser. That, of course, is way too much trouble to be practical for anyone using the app in the field. Has anyone figured out how to get a voice memo into an AppSheet file column without resorting to help from a desktop computer?
Addendum: I just realized that the iOS Voice Memo will play in in the browser of my iPhone but that on my computer m4a files (the iOS Voice Memo file type) get downloaded. An mp3 will play in the browser of either device via AppSheet. Ah, another issue making the need for a dedicated audio column, similar to the image column (which accommodates different file types), that much more apparent. ๐
Here's a little follow up:
Even though native support would be best, combining a memo recording app with AppSheet works quite nicely on Android. The problem I'm having on iOS is what you see bellow:
The audio (mp3) files are greyed out; I can't pull them into the File column. Interestingly, I don't face the same problem with pdfs; other apps that have pdfs in them let me select them via AppSheet when I try. It seems that there's something special about audio files that prevents AppSheet from picking them up in iOS. By the way, little mp3 files that I upload via AppSheet on my Android device play very well regardless of the device: iOS, Android, and my computer all open the mp3 in a browser and allow me to play it. The only problem I'm having is getting iOS to let me upload mp3s to AppSheet. I think it must be some sort of permissions issue. Any ideas?
