How allow a non-gmail user to upload files in an drive folder shared with them via a secure session?

I have been told by support that this can't be done but someone in my team swears they did it pre-Squarespace migration. Does anyone have any ideas?

Anyone can create a Google account using their existing email. This is just like creating a dropbox account or a facebook account or whatever, and then use that account to access Drive securely. Check out the "Use an existing email address" section of https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/27441?hl=en
