Unable to drag and drop a file to a shared folder shortcut located in the folder tree

Hello.

We are a long time Google Workspace client and this is our first time posting. This is really a feature request and this is being posted at the suggestion of Workspace support, see below.

We ran into an issue in the web version of Drive (i.e. when a user is logged into their Workspace account in a browser) when attempting to move a file stored in a users personal Drive to a shared folder, shared by another user, by dragging and dropping the file onto the shared folder shortcut located in the folder tree on the left of the window (visible when expanding the My Drive icon). We confirmed with Workspace support that this is not currently possible and they asked us to post this here as a feature request.

We found this process to be useful when the file to be moved and the shared folder are separated by multiple folder tree branches, such that using the right-click > Move option becomes tedious due to the need to traverse multiple directory layers. We use the Drive as our primary storage solution so this would be a very useful feature to have as it would significantly cut down the amount of time our users spend now on moving files (desktop Drive application is not an option for a number of reasons, so we primarily use the web Drive).

We are not sure if the info above is sufficient or if we need to do anything else to submit this as a feature request. We do have a video of the issue for reference, if that would be helpful.

Thank you!

I am not entirely following what you are trying to accomplish but if support told you to submit a feature request you may not be able to do what you want.  Here are the steps to submit a feature request.

There may also be some sort of workaround, but I'm just not entirely sure what the feature request is.

You can post this to the Feature Ideas section below. Doing so will allow it to be upvoted by others and possibly considered as a future feature enhancement.

If you do not already have access, you need to request it first. See https://www.googlecloudcommunity.com/gc/custom/page/page-id/Workspace-Feature-Ideas-FAQ for how to do that.

Once you have access, go to https://www.googlecloudcommunity.com/gc/Feature-Ideas/gh-p/workspace-ideas-group . There, you can upvote and comment on any similar idea, or post a new idea.

If you are submitting a feature idea, be sure to explain the problem that you're trying to solve with the feature idea, not just the idea itself. For example, saying "when my users are trying to do 'A', they often get confused by the fact that the buttons to do 'X' and to do 'Y' look quite similar to each other, which leads to this unintended consequence" is far more likely to get fixed than a feature idea that just says "change the color of the button 'Y'".

Hi newman.

Thank you for the info and the suggestions.

Have you tried creating a Shortcut to the Shared Folder in the My Drive of the file owner? You may be going between too many folders for this to be a practical solution, but otherwise maybe moving within the My Drive will work around the issue for now.

Hi JasonTM1.

Thank you for the suggestion. Our users do add the Shared Folder shortcuts to their My Drive, but, you are correct, the files that they need to move are several layers deep in their Drive so they still have to navigate back and forth.

Thank you!

Shared Drives do not work for your scenario? Perhaps managed by the same people that own your current Shared Folders? Those owners could add Shortcuts to locations on the new Shared Drive that replace the current Shared Folders where needed.

That is an interesting idea. We haven't used Shared Drives so far, but it's worth testing. Thank you!

They are very similar to Shared Folders except they are owned by your organization instead of a user. Here is a link I keep handy to double check permission levels for users. It may help you when initially granting access.
