new thread in Chat not for all spaces?

I have some older spaces where I have the ability to use threads (by simply clicking on the "new thread" on the bottom. However, new spaces that I (or my team) have created recently do not show this option, everything is in one thread - which is bad.

Is there any config I missed out?

thanks

Hi @awintersteiger :

Check out https://workspaceupdates.googleblog.com/2020/11/rooms-in-google-chat-to-be-unthreaded.html?m=1 for the details of this change.
Hope that helps!

Ian

I'm finding this issue play out in real time between two new Spaces I started just today. One of them has the 'thread' option, one does not. Why? There is not config option for this. Both were made with my account โ€” which is a 'workspace' paid account.

Very confused. Threads would be very useful here and it seems this is a bug, not a deliberate choice on Google's part

When you create a space, you get an option as to whether it should be threaded or unthreaded.

As far as I know, there's no way to change a given space from threaded to unthreaded or vice versa after it's created.

Hope that helps,

Ian

Hi

When I create a space I am not given the option "Use threaded replies". This is what I see

https://nimb.ws/lW7KQ3

The strange thing is that yesterday I created a space and was able to use threaded replies.

Today I created a new space and was not able to use threaded replies. This seems like a bug to me.

Thanks
Are

You need to select Organise conversation by Topic. This is recently changed.

Actually these are two different things

Space with in-line threading: This is the default option when creating a new space
Space organized by conversation topic: To use a space with messages grouped by conversation topic, select Advanced Arrow Right then click the checkbox marked "Organize the conversation by topic."

https://support.google.com/mail/answer/12176488?visit_id=638042879818471205-3908036030&p=threading_i...

However, I had a call with support, and they told me that in-line threading is being rolled out as we speak, and that was the reason for the un-stability.

When I create a new space now, in line threading is being set by default.

I still am unable to create spaces with in-line threading. Is there any way we can get this implemented or do we just need to wait for the roll out?

To the best of my knowledge, the rollout of in-line threading is complete by now, meaning, all customers should have it. In-line threads are automatically enabled in all new spaces. Are you sure you haven't overlooked it? It's very subtle, you only notice it when hovering your mouse over a chat message. A little popout will open that gives you an option to create a thread (looks like a speech bubble icon).

If this is anything to go by, it doesn't appear to have happened Spaces - no inline thread option.PNG

The new in-line threading only applies to newly-created Chat rooms. When you create a new space, the threading will show up. As @Are3 said above:

Space with in-line threading: This is the default option when creating a new space
Space organized by conversation topic: To use a space with messages grouped by conversation topic, select Advanced Arrow Right then click the checkbox marked "Organize the conversation by topic."

Sadly that has not happened ๐Ÿ˜ž I have created several new spaces / chats since January 2023 and sadly it doesn't pull through

Ok, so part of the issue may be with Windows. I can reply in thread via the app on my mobile phone, but not via spaces in my Gmail. Any suggestions IE. use an app for Windows?

I've seen similar things happen (with other features, though) with a couple of customers. Sometimes it is necessary to clear cookies and cache in your browser, log out of Google, then back in.

Thanks Cryptochrome. I tried clearing cookies & cache, logging out and then back in, but unfortunately the feature is still not available.

It seems to be working in all of the test accounts I have.  Are you using spaces with organize the conversation by topic turned on?  If it is turned on, there is no in-line threading.

Thanks Newman. No, I do not have organise the topic switched on.

Hi. I have 2 Workspaces. While creating a new Space on both, one shows the "Advanced > Organize conversation by topic". While the other does not show the Advanced menu.

Is this some sort of Workspace setting? I could not find any way to enable this thing in a new Space in my second Workspace.  However, we already have other Spaces with threads there.

All new spaces are automatically created with the new threaded option. The old "organize by conversation" option is being phased out. Some domains still have it, others don't. Eventually, it will be removed from all domains.

If you create a new space on a domain where this option is no longer visible, the new space will automatically get threaded replies.

> All new spaces are automatically created with the new threaded option.

Sure, but there are no threads inside. How do I start a new thread?

How do you start a new thread?

When you hover with your mousepointer over an existing message, a small popup will appear. One of the options in the popup will be to create a thread. It has a speech-bubble icon and will show "Reply in a thread".

Ah, ok then, it is a different behavior than what I was expecting. Thank you @cryptochrome

Yes, this is a completely new threading option, which replaces the old one. If you scroll all the way up in this thread to the second message, you will find a link that explains everything in detail.

Yeah I still have neither function, only the previously old 'organise conversation' function. Very annoying

Hi Gibbsy86 - are you still unable to use inline threads in your newer spaces? Just to summarize what others have mentioned -

  • When you create a new space, you will not see any options regarding the threading model or how conversations will be organized because inline threading is now the default, and you can no longer create spaces with the legacy topic threading model.
  • Once you or someone else sends a message in that space, if you hover over the message, you should see the threading icon (on the far left): Screenshot 2023-07-28 at 10.55.54 AM.png
(Note: my screenshot may look differently from yours as I am using an internal test version of Chat)

And you should be able to start using threads that way.

If you're still not seeing this, please let me know as I'd like to help you figure this out!! ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi Michelleylee,

Thanks for coming back to us. Please know it's appreciated after so long trying to find a solution.

I've created a TEST space, and it appears that this threading function now works, which is fantastic!

Thanks again, I'm not sure if we're still looking at transferring to using this software anymore, but it's great to know it's now possible.

Kind regards,
Karen ๐Ÿ˜Š

My pleasure - please continue to post your questions and feedback on the Google Cloud Community, we appreciate it!

Michelle

Adding to this, the feature of threaded chats does not show up for me at all, by default or under 'advanced' setting.  I've tried creating 4 different spaces, both directly through the google chat in my email, as well as the google chat standalone.  Tried on local computer and workstation computer.  I know threaded options works as we have other newly created chats that have this option, but the current suggestions for enabling are not correct or consistent.  Please need this looked into as clearly based on others commenting, there is a bug on this feature and being able to implement on any newly created space.  I've attached images showing the only options given during space creation, as well as after the space is created and written in, to see if the thread pops up after creation.  No luck either way.

In the new model of threading, the option to reply in a thread only appears if you hover your mouse over a message, like this:

icrew_0-1683143606514.png

Now it seems we cannot create the old type, so if I create a new room it will now operate with different rules than all the other rooms. This is very tiring

All of the older spaces will be moving to the new threading model later this year--see the announcement at https://workspaceupdates.googleblog.com/2023/02/new-google-chat-spaces-will-be-in-line-threaded.html

So you won't have to deal with the difference in threading styles for too much longer....

Hope that helps,

Ian

We are but leaves in the wind

I'm having a similar issue on our org: some users are able to quote-reply and start threads, for others neither the quote or thread options appear when hovering other's messages

Hi RandomUser -

Quote reply and inline threading are not available in legacy topic threaded spaces (the ones with the distinct boxes around topics). You are no longer able to create a legacy topic threaded space, so all net new spaces should have both features available. Let me know if you're still running into issues!
